Cecilia contacted me though a mutual friend and wanted to get some engagement photos done. I drove out to their home and started in their beautiful Richmond Hill home with a few relaxed portraits. I love to shoot at sunset because the light is gorgeous and even though it’s fall and it’s cold out, it’s so worth it. We quickly moved to a local park to get as much of that great late afternoon light as we could.
I love shooting with the light coming from behind a couple and I love playing with the flare that comes from the light hitting the lens. I think it’s dreamy and romantic.
One of my main goals when shooting a couple is showing the connection between them. I want to show how they feel about each other so that when they look back on the photos in 20 or 50 years they’ll remember the love they felt when they first were engaged.
Cecilia and Nima had a giant pack of Holi powder that they wanted to use. Holi is a brightly coloured powder and it makes for super fun photos! I knew I wanted the colours to pop and I wanted to freeze the powder in the air. I didn’t want blurry clouds of powder. So that meant shooting after dark and setting up studio lights outside. We waited until the sun dropped below the horizon and then I started test shooting, and more test shooting. When it finally got dark enough and I was happy with the lighting I let them crack open the bags of Holi powder and start throwing it at each other.
When the clouds of brightly coloured dust finally cleared, Cecilia and Nima were covered head to toe with powder and smiling ear to ear. I’m pretty sure that Cecilia went to work with pink hair the next day. These two were great fun to shoot and I’m happy that I got to meet them and take their engagement photos.
Congrats Cecilia and Nima! Your wedding is sure to be beautiful and your marriage will be even better.
Cheers!
